A pay cut over traditional working hours

Blog located in HR Solutions, Small Business posted on September 15, 2016

A recent study has shown that employees are choosing positions with flexible hours for four major reasons: work-life balance (79%), family (52%), time savings (48%), and decreased commuting stress (47%). The majority of respondents were ages 30-49 (54%), followed by those ages 50-59 (23%), and ages 20-29 (12%).

Why offer flexible hours

Given the study, it’s clear that changing the way you structure your hours is well worth the effort. In fact, it’s a win-win scenario. You save on utilities costs and your employee is saving on commuting, clothing and food expenses.

Avoiding commuting is a stress-reducer. Employees working from home are interrupted much less and are much more productive as a result. In fact, getting work done gets priority over showing up.”

Mental health and morale

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to flexible hours. In fact, every workplace is different: the people doing the work, the work that needs to be done, the leaders running the organization and the size of the organization. However, the effect of flex hours is the same across all organizations. It’s been proven that working from home has positive effects on mental health. This results in decreased turnover, less absenteeism and better morale.

Flex time options

Flex time can be offered in different formats depending on your business.

Let me share some a few:

Option 1: offer 1 full-time position to 2 part-time employees. Make sure they communicate well and there is no interruption to your business whenever employee’s switch.

Option 2: allow your employees to work different hours. You can implement different schedules to ensure full coverage. For example: 9:00am – 5:00pm; 1:00pm-9:00pm…you get the drill.

Option 3: alternate between 4 days a week and a 3 days a week. Much like a consultant.

Option 4: allow your employees to work 1-2 days from home. Make sure you set guidelines, measurable goals and accountability measures.

Flexible schedules don’t just provide employees with job satisfaction, better health, increased work-life balance and less stress. They also benefit employers. Through higher productivity levels, less turn over, and reduced absenteeism, employers are able to retain qualified employees and save money.
